This is an ultra-quick review. Last night Leanne and I finally got around to renting Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice on iTunes.
Has there ever been a movie more perfectly cast? To the last one, ever person was brilliant. Tom Hollander as Mr. Collins, however, stole the show. Well, maybe not quite. But his performance was worth the price of admission. Since all the others were great as well, the $3 rental felt like an insufficient tip for a delicious dinner we didn't have to pay for.
Chick flick though it be, Pride and Prejudice is definitely a movie I'd recommend.

I agree, I loved it! Have seen it a couple of times since I can rented it from the library.

In all the adaptations I've ever seen (& I've seen a lot...even a Mormon version & a Bollywood version), I agree that Joe Wright had the best Mr. Collins! The scene at the ball where the "vertically challenged" Collins tries to get Darcy's attention & Darcy turns around & looks right over him is pure physical comedy in the most classic sense!
I expected to HATE the movie when I first heard it advertised (I mean, Keira Knightly as Lizzie Bennett? And a film directed by the guy who brought us Bridget Jones?)...so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw the film & it ended up being my favorite version of all time (thus far!) :-)

Don't know much about Keira Knightly except to say that if, when I read Pride and Prejudice, Lizzie looked like that in my mind's eye, I would have reread it by now.

I am a 24 year old male. This movie is in my top 5 favorites. I don't know what it is about the movie, but the entire story (thanks to Jane Austen) is moving, comical, and full of irony. The plot comes together wonderfully, especially in the scene with Donald Sutherland beginning to cry with tears of joy, that his "unique" and independent daughter has finally fallen in love.
Very good, concise critique. I agree that $3 feels like an insufficient tip for such a fine movie. That is why I bought it! :)
