Normally I like to spend a bit of time writing about trips to the mountains. Tonight I need to be responsible and brief. Tomorrow is my daughter's birthday, and I've got to think of some games. Turns out like two dozen more people decided to come than we expected! We'll be glad for them all, but we need to prep big time.
Anyway, just a quick call out regarding Silver City Resort in Mineral King, California. Alright, if you do any cabin camping in your life, make sure it is at Silver City. That place is awesome! Forest and his wife - sorry I forgot her name :-( are great hosts. The staff are friendly. The food is delicious. The grounds are super fun for children and extra relaxing for adults. And how can you beat being tucked away in one of the most gorgeous stretches of the Sierras?
It was a real pleasure to introduce the rest of the family to this place. For the last two years I've camped at Mineral King and hiked around. On the eastern side of the valley is the Great Western Divide. On the western side are more eleven thousand foot mountains. Waterfalls everywhere. The place is indescribable. Totally awe inspiring. And my family loved it! The kids were in hog heaven racing over the meadows chasing marmots. When we hiked across some leftover icy snow, they went wild, tossing snow balls at giant sequoias. My lovely wife was not at all faltering my vacation planning efforts when she explained, "This place is as beautiful as Yosemite but without all the people." Perfect summary. Don't get me wrong. Yosemite is something to behold. But trust me, Mineral King possesses close to the same allure. The crowds in the Yosemite valley are an order of magnitude greater than Mineral King, where you'll see way more deer and marmots than people.
Deep breath. Alright that's enough. Make sure you go some day.
